In the last few months of following wwe programming I've found the reason I'm watching wwe isn't for the heavyweights fighting over one of the two big championships or the women's revolution or even nxt.
Its been because of one man.
The self proclaimed king of the cruiserweights.
Since Neville joined the cruiserweight division after attacking Rich Swann he's been on top of his game.
Always a great wrestler when it comes to the action he was missing that all important thing that makes a good wrestler a great one. Character.
But in this run he's having it seems like he's tapped into something inside of himself & found that character.
With this newfound character has come confidence & it shows.
He showed brief glimpses of this in his nxt feud with Sami Zayn. He's a self assured wrestler who knows he's the best.
His work has the air of a veteran who has mastered his craft. He does less & it means more. This Neville knows he doesn't have to do a 630 senton or a double moonsault, he can have two or three big moves per match & make it mean more than 10 high risk moves.(See him slowly ascend to the top & measure his opponent before a dropkick rather than rushing)
He can slowly dissect his opponent with what has become one of his main offensive weapons; a simple stomp, or he can grind them down with a chinlock.
He's done what has become a lost art. He's changed his moveset to match his character. Sure he can take to the skies & bust out a red arrow to finish a particular pesky opponent but he can just as easily lock in his modified rings of Saturn & enjoy torturing them.(See his recent match on raw with Mustapha Ali where he said Fu to the crowd, you don't deserve the red arrow)
It's not just the moves of course it's the little things; the looks of disdain to the audience, the slow self assured saunter to the ring, the refusal to pose on the ropes before a match. It's Character & a wrestler at the top of his game.
For me he's become must see. The reason I watch & the only thing that entices & excites me to watch. For me he was the reason I watched Wrestlemania.
But it seems like the rest of the crowd & even the hardcores are more interested in beachballs than watching the man gravity is a servant to. Hopefully the work Neville & his fellow cruiserweights are putting in gets some notice & appreciation in the coming months & we can all hail to the King.
Is anyone else enjoying Neville as much as I am?
In my opinion he & Aj Styles(now there's a match that needs to happen) are the best wrestlers in the world right now but Neville seems to be flying under the radar.
