After having watched Ibushi in the CWC I feel he would be wasted in just the cruiserweight division, the man has star written all over him. Unless of course the actual division itself is pushed to mean something. Which got me to thinking, is their intention to simply reintroduce it as a low to mid card division as was, or do you think they might be considering actually pushing it along the lines of MMA in that it is just a separate weight class with the title on a par with the Heavyweight belt in importance?
It will be interesting to see if the word 'Heavyweight' suddenly appears after Universal once the division is reintroduced, or for that matter if the u205 belt is known as the Universal Cruiserweight championship...

They'll push the belt as equal in the sense that the announcers will tell us that it is. But I'll bet it gets defended on the pre-show more often than in the main event over the next 12 months of PPVs.
As far as Ibushi goes, WCW was right to use it as a stepping stone for guys like Jericho and Eddie Guerrero, but the death of the division came when the Billy Kidmans and Prince Iaukeas of the world were being elevated to TV and US title feuds. I think that will be the key to the division's success in WWE - being able to discern the guys like Ibushi and Balor that could find a home in the main event and being able to push the guys that belong in the cruiserweight division without making it look like a punishment to be "stuck" there.

Ibushi didn't sign.
Universal title and world title have no weight division anymore.
It's up to the guys to make the titles relevant.

Ibushi is saying he hasn't signed, but that of course doesn't necessarily mean that he hasn't signed, or won't sign in the near future. WWE tells people who have signed to stay quiet until they announce it. Very possible that they feel telling people that Ibushi has signed would give away the tournament winner.

Ibushi didn't sign. Universal title and world title have no weight division anymore. It's up to the guys to make the titles relevant. I wasn't aware they did in the first place. Yes the WWE World Championship used to have Heavyweight in it but that was because it had been unified with the World Heavyweight title, which was only so named to differentiate itself from the WWE Championship. Since the old cruiserweight title was disbanded there has been no real weight classifications, which is kind of the point of my question, now that they are re-introducing it I wonder if there will be a different approach. But yes you're right in that ultimately it's the guys who make the belt, though obviously the division itself needs to be booked properly. If a feud between two cruiserweights catches fire then who's to say it couldn't main event a PPV? I liked Jason's idea in What's NXT of having Gargano and Ciampa feud over it, though they would need to have a lengthy run in the tag divison to build up the story. But imagine their match in the CWC in front of a crowd of 15k plus... And yes, Ibushi saying he hasn't signed doesn't necessarily mean he hasn't. This is pro wrestling after all...!

It'll be just another belt for just another match on the card. It's a way to for Raw to say they have 5 title matches while Smackdown can only have 4. I also agree with deezy, it'll pretty much depend on who they put the title on and how that champ is used on the show. It's way to early to judge though, you can't really base it on the CWC.

I'm honestly not sold on Ibushi yet. He's a great wrestler, but I don't see a lot of charisma in him, and I don't think he can carry the division on just good matches. I would prefer if they put the belt on someone like Rich Swann or TJ Perkins, and I hope one of them wins the tournament also.
