They should have named it the WWE world heavyweigght championship and then have both brands fight for who really deserves the name. THta is the meaning of competition.

Dont why they just don't call it the WWE Raw championship, and Smackdown Championship.
The terms world, or heavyweight are antiquated in this WWE universe. Since they are ubiquitous globally and there are no weight classes.

To completely go in a different direction from the topic, I would have much rather them keep it to the 1 world title and have both brands fight for it and make it a competition over what brand has the champion. Example: Dean Ambrose is the Champ and defends it exclusively on Smackdown. To determine the #1 contender for each PPV, each brand has a #1 contender and the #1 for SD and #1 for Raw fight for the right to go against Ambrose. I know this is fantasy but try giving it a sports feel and try to make people suspend there disbelief that both brands are competing against one another like sports has National and American League, Eastern and Western Conference. With my logic, do a home "field" advantage if you were to have both #1 contenders from both brands compete and do a coin flip to see which brand they would have there match to give the feel that SD is on Raws territory and the cards are stacked against them and vice versa. I'm sure there are other ways to go about it but I am not a fan at the moment of having both brands having a Champion. If anything, try elevating the US or the IC title but what the hell do I know.....

One year from now one of the two titles will open WM with both partecipants boasting about being in "the main event" of WM like Edge did when he faced Del Rio prior to retiring.

Ultimately, one title closes Wrestlemania and the other one doesn't. Though I guess they could just book The Rock as the main event every year and keep both titles in the undercard... you know, for the sake of fairness.

It reminds me of the old WCW International World Championship, but I wonder if it was inspired inadvertently by former WWE training ground WWC's WWC Universal Heavyweight Championship.

"WWE UNIVERSE" is my least favourite buzz word. I dont use it. I simply say "fans". I think when John & Wai say universal champion on a casual basis i will cringe. Dont be a mark y'all. Call it the Raw title like me.

I could have sworn I named a championship the "Universal" Championship when I was playing Total Extreme Wrestling 2005. Maybe they will use the belt graphics too!
