A few days ago I was watching the seemingly ever-present "Monday Night Wars" documentary on the WWE Network, and it got me thinking about the nWo.
The nWo was brilliant in its introduction. You started off with one member, a very intriguing "outsider" in Scott Hall. Then you added an even more intriguing outsider in former WWE Champion Kevin Nash! But the coup de grace was the emotional investment felt when Hulk Hogan was introduced as the group's leader!
Now, I know it's a different time now. There is no serious competitor to Vince McMahon in the USA today, so there are no real rival wrestlers to steal from another top promotion, nor is there the need for the WWE to create a ground-breaking stable to boost ratings as they're already the market leader. But nevertheless, in today's day-and-age, who would you pick as the three prime pieces of a new nWo-like faction in the WWE, if you had to introduce these three characters in today's world?

Reform the Shield as heels.

In an era where WWE bring back old guys it would be wise to bring back old factions. The letters nWo don't age. Just put 3 guys in those t-shirts and have them go. It's actually quite brilliant. Ryan Ward are you on this board??
Finn Balor as the leader. Apollo Crews as the young guy who benefits when the stable is finished. Anderson and Gallows as the tag team for when they sweep all the belts.

I have a few options (other than just doing The Bullet Club, which would be the best answer if you could figure out a way to not have them treated like 100 percent babyfaces):
The Returning Castoffs Invasion Alberto Del Rio Cody Rhodes Aron Stevens
I haven't decided if they're led by Bruce Prichard or Bill DeMott... and in the big swerve, the Hardy Boyz join them during their big PPV Invasion vs. WWE match
The NXT Invasion Bobby Roode (I don't love him in this role, but he's the only current NXT guy that would make it even resemble a legit faction on the main stage) Tommaso Ciampa The Authors of Pain
The "New Legacy" Invasion Randy Orton Curtis Axel The Colons
The "Might Actually Get a Heel Reaction" Invasion Dolph Ziggler Elias Samson The Ascension

I mean, obviously a totally different time... and this is pure fantasy.
Do it in reverse.
You start with a major star heel turn with the obvious one -John Cena.
Next a returning star, who in today's WWE landscape would be an outsider, but has a history... Somebody like MVP or a John Morrison.. Something along those lines. OR, you go with somebody like Cody Rhodes, as somebody more recent who left feeling mistreated.
Final piece of the puzzle, a true shock that would get people talking. In this case, a shocking return nobody would see coming (and something truly on the level of a Hogan heel turn) - CM Punk.
Totally impossible, and I'm sure their are some logic issues... But that's just me throwing out an idea.

I think if you're going to grab attention I'd go similar to Mark but start with CM Punk coming back. Having him talk about wanting things to change (again). I'd then call up Kassius Ohno as Punk was very vocal about the fact he wanted him to be the 3rd Shield member and not Reigns. Then to end it I'd go with the face of the company turning heel, John Cena. What better way to make those massive changes than to get the very face of the company. It could also be a way of "passing the torch" as you build to someone finally beating Cena, mostly likely Reigns.

I was originally going to put him in the middle role, but went with others, since I was trying to stick to a familiar (main roster) face returning. But I would agree very much with you, with that trio. Punk, Ohno, Cena.

Good question.
I'd struggle to leave out Cena, Reigns. Punk and Owens.

Good question, bad stomach reaction... The thought of having to relive the NwO again is turning my stomach.
It's not really something I want to see revived and I certainly don't want to see the original crew either... Just don't see it, it's an old gimmick that has seen its time come and go.
Let's hope it stays gone.

Great feedback guys.
My first thought for the first "outsider" would have been Alberto Del Rio, but he's already left the WWE, gone back, and left again. So going back probably wouldn't be that special, even though he's probably the most well-known name currently on the American Indy Circuit. Then I thought of Rey Mysterio but he's a bit older and I don't feel has the same momentum behind him. Anyways, I went for:
First Pick: The Young Bucks
Maybe it's cheating to have two people introduced as my first member, but they're really an inseparable package. And like the original Scott Hall debut, these guys would be seen as relatively well-known outsiders to the WWE Universe.
Second Pick: CM Punk
This would be the HOLY S*** moment. I doubt Punk would ever go back to the WWE, but if he did it would certainly raise eyebrows. Plus a stable with him and the Young Bucks seems to make sense somehow.
Third Pick: The Undertaker
I know most people think that John Cena is the modern-day equivalent of Hulk Hogan, but I don't think John Cena would actually get booed if he turned heel. Maybe a few little kids would cry, but if The Undertaker stopped his iconic entrance mid-way through and then started ragging on the audience, I think you would genuinely upset everyone! The only issue is that Taker can't really wrestle anymore, but for the emotional investment I'd still make him the group's third member.

I'd like to see a similar invasion type angle to bring them in. With a current or past stalwart as the leader and the one responsible for the rest coming.
Without much thought into logic, this is my "dream scenario":
RAW after Survivor Series, Mike Bennett and Maria are sitting ringside. A superstar approaches them and they say they are "just waiting for some friends and enjoying the show."
SDL after Survivor Series, Adam Cole and Candice LeRae are sitting ringside. Kevin Owens approaches them and they say the same thing.
A few weeks go by, with sporadic appearances by the "couples" always claiming the same story. While the commentators suggest they are mixing up the shows and waiting for each other.
Royal Rumble, both couples sit ringside on opposite sides. People are confused, the arena is buzzing. Number 30. CULT OF PERSONALITY. CM Punk accompanied by AJ Lee. Punk wins the Rumble, on his way to FINALLY headlining a Mania. All the couples celebrate in the ring.

With due respect to everybody's opinion above, this thread is reminding me how little I personally care about CM Punk. If he ever returns, I will most likely enjoy his matches, because he's an excellent wrestler. But I am neither excited for nor interested in watching him play martyr and returning savior. And God forbid the booking ever calls for him to lose a match - especially to somebody who has never worked in Ring of Honor. The smark rage would be unbearable.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath or salivating over a potential return, I just think it would make for some damn good television.

Punk coming back would be the biggest wrestling story of the year, even bigger than Okada/Omega.
But WWE would fuck it up. That's why Punk will never come back.
