Progress's annual SSS16 tournament happens this coming weekend.
First Round Matchups
Side A
* Jack Sexsmith vs. Zack Gibson
* Zack Sabre Jr. vs. David Starr
* Jimmy Havoc vs. Travis Banks
* Mark Andrews vs. Flamita
Side B
* Tyler Bate vs. Pastor William Eaver
* Mark Haskins vs. Flash Morgan Webster
* Matt Riddle vs. Trent Seven
* Jeff Cobb vs. Nathan Cruz
This is one of the premiere tournaments of the UK wrestling calendar.
The past two years have been excellent.
Interested on people's thoughts on he first round matches & predictions for the eventual winner.

I'm going to the show on the Sunday and Monday and Sunday sees the crowning of the first Progress Women's champion in a 3 way between Jinny, Toni Storm and Laura Di Matteo which should be a good one.
My bet for the eventual winner of the tournament is Matt Riddle.
If anyone is interested in feedback from Day 2 and Day 3 am happy to give it.
Plus if anyone doesn't know, thy are putting on a show on Sat, 12th August at the Elmcor Centre in Queens.

saw last year's show. It was excellent although I thought the finals was way shorter than I was expecting it to be. Amazing line-up and Progress is so hot right now. Andrews/Flamita is the first round match I am most excited about. Riddle/Cobb is a lock for the second round I would say. I see Tyler Bate coming out of his block, but then losing in the final to give somebody the rub. Maybe the winner of Jimmy Havoc/Travis Banks?  |

I went to last years shows and so pissed I'm not going to these shows! Especially after that line up was announced. I'm thinking the layout will be kinder to the tournament as well. 1st round on Day 1, Quarters on Day 2 and then probably semi & finals on Day 3. That way we'll get longer matches as I agree with RKing that the finals last year was way shorter than I was expecting and I imagine it was because End had done 2 matches (1 being murdered by Hero) and Andrews had done 3 before that final match.
In terms of this tournament:
*Sexsmith/Gibson-It has to be Gibson. While Jack would be a surprise think it'd be a waste of a match if we go Sexsmith vs. Sabre/Starr in the next round.
*Sabre/Starr-Going with Sabre just because of his history with the company.
*Havoc/Banks-Totally going with Banks, could easily see him winning it.
*Andrews/Flamita-Could go either way but picking Flamita as the surprise.
*Bate/Eaver-Easily Bate. I have just watched a promo on Progress' youtube channel and it's made me think Tyler could possibly win the whole thing. They've teased him/Dunne very well.
*Haskins/Webster-Haskins was my pick for last year before his injury and I'm picking him to go far this year. I'm thinking Haskins goes pretty deep, they do him getting some revenge on Bate in the next round and possibly see him in the finals.
*Riddle/Seven-Riddle winning and at least getting to the semis.
*Cobb/Cruz-Cobb so we get Cobb/Riddle.
My overall pick is Travis Banks who has got super over. Him vs. Bate in the finals would be a good story to tell but my personal choice would be Haskins/Banks as the finals. I'm not gonna lie my attention for Day 2 is locked onto the Women's title match! It's going to be the main event and I can't wait to see it. Want Jinny to take it so badly, she deserves it.

Sexsmith is a product of Progress' wrestling school and was a very over the top sex addict gimmick. His finisher has him putting a condom over his hand and applying the mandible claw in different ways. The story recently has been trying to get him over as an actual wrestler than just a gimmick and he has been taking some major beatings before beating Paul Robinson to get into this. I said in my predictions that it would be a waste to have him advance and I still think that, I get why he won as Gibson was one of the guys who beat the hell out of him so this is his revenge but I don't have high hopes for Sexsmith/Sabre, especially when a Gibson/Sabre match would have been incredible. I think because I've watched Sexsmith since his debut it's hard for me to separate this new version of him from his original and in fairness it's the same gimmick but he's just more serious in the ring. |

I'm not happy that Jinny didn't win that title but from what I've heard it was a fantastic match and got a standing ovation. While I might not have liked the result, I was sure that match was going to be outstanding. Can't wait to watch it.

I was surprised Toni picked up the win. Figured they were going to reboot Jinny/LDM and have Laura chase for the title. Heard the match was filled with botches and fairly awkward.

They also picked the one woman who spends more time in Japan than in the UK these days. I really feel like they could do so much more with Jinny as champ, I imagine she will get that belt sooner rather than later but still. I feel like Progress are afraid of having heels win tournaments, I can't think of any tournament where they had a heel win. Also like you said there's still the Jinny/LDM story going and that could do be helped with the belt.

I like how they're doing a show a day over the weekend and I can't wait to watch these shows. Personally I've already pre-ordered the photobook they're advertising as some of the picks I've seen are just awesome.
