I'm going through old raws and am in 2005. I'm currently watching raw homecoming which has the Angle HBK match. I'm a big fan of this one as well as the Angle Brock and of course HBK Bret. I wish they'd do these more often. Seems there hasn't been one in awhile besides Bayley and Sash which also was great. What matches do you guys like and who currently would be good in an iron man match? I think Rollins, Ownes, AJ and Cena and two man combo could be good.

not a huge fan of ironman matches on the whole. You know how long it's going to go, and you know it's going to come down to the last 30 seconds. I just can't get into them knowing I really only NEED to watch the last 2 minutes.

I just can't get into them knowing I really only NEED to watch the last 2 minutes. I agree. I would prefer to see a one-fall match go 45 minutes or longer unannounced as long as the talent and the storyline warrant it. Also, once you add the Iron Man stipulation, guys who routinely kick out off multiple finishers are suddenly getting pinned clean with a DDT at the 10-minute mark.

The hour ones are a bit too long and I find it hard to believe multiple falls could happen in a 30 minute one when most big matches go 20/25 easy without any falls. Having said that I certainly wasn't complaining when Sasha/Bayley had that great match in NXT, I'm just not dying to see another one any time soon.

Agree with the other people that said it's predictable. I'm far more in favour of a match going 40+ minutes without warning. Most WWE main events happen in that 20-30 minute window. I could see a Rollins vs Styles match being billed normally but then going past 45 minutes and being an all-time classic. Hoping we get that in 2017.

It has its place, and that is a rare place. Feuds just don't get hot enough, in WWE anyway, for them to warrant this stipulation. Why would I want to watch two guys fight for an hour when I've already seen them fight in tags on Raw for 3 weeks leading up to the PPV?
I also agree with the above criticism that it is predictable.
I'd rather see a two out of three falls match. Similar drama but the finish isn't as predictable. Three stages of Hell was a nice stipulation, especially if the third stage is one of the wrestler's gimmick match (ie. Undertaker - Hell in a Cell). That adds some narrative of the other wrestler trying to avoid getting to the third stage. You can also still use the time limit as a narrative, per Triple H/Rock at Fully Loaded '98, but it doesn't require an hour.

I think the biggest factor in an Ironman match being a draw is the in ring work. If we look at Sasha vs. Bayley, there was very little feud behind it and the biggest selling point was "these 2 had an outstanding match and now you'll see it again for a minimal of 30 minutes". That and they were main eventing a NXT takeover.
But as the Overgiver mentioned, it loses its appeal when you watch these wrestlers have a match on countless occasions before the ironman match. Imagine if they announced an ironman for Sheamus & Cesaro after the Best of 7.
