Did anyone here ever watch any AWA? It didn't air here when I was growing up, so I didn't actually get to see any of it on TV. My exposure to the AWA comes from wrestling magazines, the AWA VHS tape Hulk Hogan's Highlights 1981-1983 and WWE Presents The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA.

I actually watch the reruns on ESPN Classic now, its crazy to see how many WWF guys came through there. That was actually brought up on The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA. The WWF took most of their top guys (plus Sherri Martel). Toward the end, they had trouble having credible main event level talent because the WWF kept taking most of their best wrestlers. That's awesome to hear about ESPN Classic too. I just checked and ESPN Classic Canada airs AWA stuff too, but unfortunately, I don't get that channel anymore. I remember a few years back they were showing the TNA weekly PPVs.

I'm still killing myself for passing up seeing it live at the Showboat Hotel in Vegas. My family summer vacations were always in Vegas. In my mid teens at the time, I was a fan of the AWA, but never pushed my parents hard enough to take me there. Been to the hotel many times over the years and it was sad to see it torn down a few years ago. That place at the time was known to have one of the worlds largest bowling alley too. It had something like 100 plus bowling lanes.

I remember seeing it on ESPN during the late 80's and just being amazed that the commentators called it 'The Major League of Professional Wrestling'.
At the time I didn't understand at all how they could say that seeing how much smaller the crowds were but I watched seeing as how they were on ESPN. That lent it validity and it made me think, well, that WWF stuff is staged I'm sure, but THIS stuff is on ESPN....and surely ESPN would never in good conscience allow a sporting contest with a fixed outcome be broadcast....right?
Ah, to be young and naive again lol.

I grew up in Milwaukee, so in addition to the ESPN show, I could see the syndicated show that went into all the cities in the territory. I remember it from about 1986 and just seeing all the future stars that came through there, good stuff.

If I am bored on the computer and I can't find anything else on tv, I will put the AWA Classics on the tv and have it on in the background.
The AWA dvd the WWE put out was pretty good I thought.

Im a huge sports fan and recently read "These Guys Have All The Fun" The History of ESPN and was excited to see what they said about AWA and im pretty sure they said one sentance about it and thats it.
Anywhoo I dont know if it was avaiable in the Calgary area and if it was I was 4 when the company closed but I have seen some of it on ESPN Classics Canada and the AWA DVD that the WWE came out with.

It's about 3 paragraphs in the book. One guy tells about how one producer was all excited when they found out that Sgt. Slaughter was in AWA.

When I began watching wrestling in 1989, ESPN had AWA wrestling on every Monday afternoon at 4:00. And Tuesday through Friday they had "Legends of WCCW" (and later GWF) on in the same time slot.
This was right around the time that the company was on it's last leg. I do remember that one of the last Main Event programs they had was between then AWA Champion Larry Zybisco and Harley Race. I remember them having a great TV match for the Title...
I also had the Hulk Hogans highlight tape with a few of his AWA matches. The Spectacular Legacy of The AWA dvd in my opinion is one of the best documentaries that the WWE has produced. It is very rich in wrestling history and I still watch it every now and then...
If anyone has the dvd I highly recomend that you watch the match between Nick Bockwinkle and Curt Hennig. The match went to a 60 min time limit draw and is one of the best matches I have ever seen...
