You know how long Hulk Hogan, the biggest, most famous star the WWE ever had, was around for during his legendary run?
Nine years. That's it. Nine years and they were ready to place him on an ice barge and push him out to sea because they saw the handwriting on the wall that maybe people were tired of the Hulkamania act.
John Cena has been the guy who gets booed out of every building every night no matter what he does for like 12, 13 years now. Granted, he's much less part of the show and isn't in every main event and winning the title these days but still, for like 13 years now no matter what he did, he hugged cancer kids and did all the charities, they guy could have saved babies from a burning building and the crowds still would have booed him and chanted "Cena Sucks! Cena Sucks!" and they will until they day he retires.
A whole generation of kids have had a hero that got mercilessly booed every single night, and we've had to sit here and go "they should just turn him heel" for 13 years and of course they never did.
Now we have Roman Reigns. The fans hate him. They boo him like he's the reincarnation of Hitler. The WWE has done everything they can think of to make this guy a babyface and it just causes the crowds to boo him even more. They could have turned Reigns heel two years ago and by now these asshole fans would have turned him babyface and they'd have their guy, a Hero with an edge that the fans actually cheer for. Instead, they just keep trying to push him as this valiant babyface who "defies the odds" and "overcomes adversity" and all of the same idiotic shit that didn't work for John Cena. They still haven't figured out that you can't have a guy who looks like The Incredible Hulk (Cena) or fucking Rambo (Reigns) and have people get behind them as plucky scrappers who never say die and fight from underneath to defy the odds.
They even had a crazy hillbilly throw him off of a ledge while strapped down to a gurney and then pushed a damned ambulance end over end with him inside it and then tonight they had that same deranged hillbilly beat him pillar to post and smash his ribs with the freakin' metal stair to the point where he was coughing up blood in an attempt to garner sympathy for Roman and show him as this guy who can take this hellacious beating but still have the inner strength to fight on and blah blah blah blah blah! People were chanting "Thank you, Stroman" while we supposed to be concerned for Roman's health
This is what it's gonna be, isn't it? For the next 10, 12 years. This is what we're gonna have to deal with. another decade or more of their "top babyface" being booed out of every building every night. Years and years and years of having them try to explain him as "The controversial champion" who gets "mixed reactions". It's gonna be John Cena all over again. I don't even hate John Cena, but I hate that WWE was too stubborn to stop pushing the guy like everybody loves him when it was obvious that everybody didn't. They aren't gonna learn anything from this at all. Their just gonna keep trying to make Roman Reigns the beloved heroic good guy, crowd reactions be damned. Another decade of denial. Another decade insisting that he's actually really popular you guys, it's just there's this very vocal minority who drowns out all the cheers.
Hulkamania ran wild in WWF for NINE years, and that was with almost a whole year off after WrestleMania 8 so really it was just Eight years, and the WWF was savvy enough to try to put him out to pasture before the fans completely turned on him. Their biggest star during the most important era in the history of the company if not the whole industry was expendable to them in under a decade.
That One Night Stand show where the nerds threatened to RIOT if John Cena won was ELEVEN years ago and I wouldn't be surprised if Cena never completely goes away.
And now here's Roman Reigns to keep the vicious cycle going in perpetuity. "Here comes the Big Dog that Runs the Yard!" BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! "The valiant Roman Reigns overcomes his greatest challenge yet! He's so heroic!" BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! "The WWE Universe here in Chicago are on their feet for the phenomenal Roman Reigns!" CM PUNK!! CM PUNK!! CM PUNK!! CM PUNK!! "Roman Reigns, the 17 time World Champion, may be the greatest of all time!!" BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Every night. Every god damn night for the next 10, 11, 12 years...
All because the WWE is too stubborn to realize the fans will never accept the guy they want. No matter what they do, no matter how they try: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
In the immortal words of Jim Cornette: Fuck This Company
