An elaboration of my call to The LAW.
When did Bayley become this sacred cow that can't lose matches? I get that people like Bayley and she is popular amongst Smart Marks and little girls. I don't have a problem with Bayley but what's with this reaction that is like "How dare they beat Bayley?! In her HOME TOWN, no less!"
Who cares if Bayley lost in her home town? Bigger, better, more popular wrestlers have lost in their home towns before. Hell, WWE beats people in their home towns all the time. The announcers even got a dig in on Booker T about it happening to him a bunch.
Everybody's previous female internet darling, Sasha Banks, lost in her home town and they didn't burn the arena down. I'm sure they drew just about the same house when they went back to Boston after Sasha lost and nobody cancelled their WWE Network because of it. Is beating popular stars in their home towns necessarily good for business? No, of course not. But theses are not the territory days anymore. The audience is way bigger than whichever hockey arena they happen to be performing in on any given night.
To me, an adult man who doesn't live in San Jose, I don't care one bit that Bayley lost. I don't have any particular problem with Bayley, I think she's good for female fans and I like that she's wholesome and likable and an above average worker but let's stop acting like she's like the female Bret Hart and that it would irrevocably damage her image if she doesn't win all the time.
In defense of Alexa Bliss... Alexa Bliss is great. I love Alexa Bliss. She's everything you could possibly want in a professional wrestler, particularly a female wrestler. She carries herself like a star, she is very expressive, she's beautiful (yes, this matters) and she does all of the little intangible things things in the ring and in front of the camera exceptionally well. When Alexa Bliss comes out onto the ramp I go "Wow". She's got it in spades.
The only flaw in Alexa's overall package is that her matches are kinda janky. She isn't quite as smooth a worker as some of the others, but she is far from terrible. She's actually quite good. This isn't Candice Michelle or Kelly Kelly we're talking about here. I dare say she's every bit as capable as Bayley or Sasha Banks (who is totally over rated, BTW) in the ring. I seem to remember some of those Bayley/Charlotte and Sasha/Charlotte matches having their share of rough patches in them.
Sasha Banks is like the beta version of Alexa Bliss. Everything that Sasha has, Alexa has better. You can argue that Sasha is the better worker, but whatever greatness Sasha had in NXT I haven't seen it on the main roster. Think about it, aside from Sasha's workrate (which I'm not convinced is that much if any better) Everything about Sasha Banks' presentation is inferior to Alexa Bliss. I remember when Sasha Banks had just been called up from NXT and when she wasn't around people would chant "We Want Sasha! We Want Sasha!" and then after she had been around for a while and everybody got to see this great Sasha from NXT all the Smart Marks raved about they were like "This is it?" and now people don't chant for Sasha anymore, not even during her matches. The same is true of Bayley but to a lesser degree.
If you took everything about Alexa Bliss that is not her actual in-ring work and her physical stature and transplanted it into Charlotte, she'd actually be as great as the WWE would have you believe she is. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Charlotte, but she has three things that allow her to overcome her deficiencies; She's tall and athletic, She's an above average worker (which equals "great" on the WWE female worker scale), and she's Ric Flair's daughter. That's it. She's tall but she's also kinda gangly and a bit clumsy, her promos range from "bad" to "kinda okay", She's supposed to be this dominant "Queen" but she loses all the time, she doesn't really have the right "Bad girl/Bitch" facials or vibe, and every photo of her is Photoshopped to hell and back, much like Sasha Banks, you see a picture of Charlotte on a poster or an on screen graphic and you go "Wait, is that supposed to be Charlotte?". I'm not calling Charlotte or Sasha ugly, but people in WWE production must think that they are because they always look different in photographs than they do when they walk out onto the ramp. You don't gotta Photoshop Alexa Bliss. I'll bet the production team likes that. Less work.
If Alexa Bliss was "Alexa Flair" or "Alexa Austin" or "Alexa Anoai'i" then she would be The Queen. Alexa is not tall but so what. It's not important that female wrestlers be tall. Alexa is not the best worker in her division but so what. This is pro wrestling. You don't have to be the best worker to be the best pro wrestler or else Dean Malenko would be the most famous wrestler ever and not Hulk Hogan.
Alexa Bliss' only shortcoming, no pun intended, is that they didn't keep her in developmental for longer and let her smooth out the rough edges of her in ring work... but who can blame them for wanting to bring her up? She's dynamic, she's expressive, she's sexy as hell, she has all of the intangibles, she looks like a star. Her work will get better. Even if it doesn't so what. You put Alexa's face on one piece of merch and Bayley's face on another, or Charlotte's, or Sasha's, or any other woman besides Becky and maybe Asuka and who's is gonna sell better? Beauty is subjective by I say it'd be Alexa Bliss.
Alexa is not perfect, but she's a pretty damn great heel and she's just going to get better, and one day she's gonna be a pretty damn great babyface.
Why beat Bayley in her hometown? Why not just do it tomorrow on Raw or at the next Raw PPV? I don't know, I'm not Vince McMahon or Triple H. Did she have to lose in her home town? No, but really what difference does it make? Since when is Bayley this sacred cow that can't lose matches? Maybe they see more value in Bayley chasing the title and Alexa as he devious foil. Maybe they aren't internet Smart Marks or 8 year old girls and they see what I see in Alexa Bliss, she's gonna be their next big female star.
