I think it's also a case of you can work a headbutt and get the same reaction while not hurting yourself. Drew Galloway has been doing it on the indies and he's not knocking heads but the way he does it, added with the fact his long hair hides a lot, makes it look impactful while you can tell it's safe. That hard hitting style kind of evolved from chops back in the day. Guys who worked with Flair & Benoit have said that they laid those chops in. It's one of those moves that can create a disgusting sound that fans react to, unfortunately that downplayed other strikes that wouldn't make that big sound. Also the rise of MMA didn't help as many wrestlers want to prove they have bigger dicks and throw some big strikes. I've always thought the worse offender of this was Low Ki who is reckless & uncaring at times with the guys he works, I mean just look at his double stomp. The guy isn't working any of that.
