I was thinking last night whether given the choice would I rather go to see The Royal Rumble live or attend Wrestlemania live. Since I chose The Rumble, I thought why not the Grand Daddy of them all.
Then I realised that other than the huge stadium, the fireworks and the fancy ring gear that is worn, the recent Mania cards don't seem all that special. For example take away Sting VS Triple H, you wouldn't bat an eyelid if the rest of last year's Mania card happened at Payback, which was 2 months later.
Granted The Rumble match is unique and injuries hamper cards, but surely Wrestlemania line ups need to feel more special.

Last years Mania was the most profitable in its existence.
Rumble is fun, but it will never equate to Mania. Rumble is the Pro Bowl....Wrestlemania is the Superbowl.

Rumble was my Mania this year. I looked forward to it for 6 weeks then I got depressed when I thought it was 1 week, but it was really the week after. Mania doesn't need to be 5 hours. I only remember Bryan winning a belt and Seth winning a belt from last year. Come to think of it, that's more than I can remember about TLC or Survivor Series. I even stopped drinking at PPVs!

The Rumble will always feel special and have that appeal but I've never seen it as more important than Mania. To counter your point about being able to put the same matches on a later PPV, Mania is the show where you typically get first time matches. We did get endless rematches after Mania but going into it those matches didn't happen before that show.

After watching some WrestleMania documentary, the wrestlers all feel no one remembers matches unless they were at Mania. Chances are that's because more people watch Mania than any other PPV. Who can Remember a match of the year from Raw February 31st, 2011?

Its about time someone caught that joke. I was THIS CLOSE to posting that in the fact checking thread lol jk But back to original post.. I do believe Wrestlemania is overrated. It's a fun spectacle to take in and probably fun to attend.. But as a card its never really the best card of the year bottom to top..

The boom period, the height of WWE's glory.

A lot of people will hate me for saing it this way but Wrestlemania is just like any wrestling event, but it was the "first" close circuit/ppv event for wrestling that was so huge and grandiose. Now? Much like the SuperBowl is just another football game wiht lots of hype, so is wrestlemania.

It's only time of year pro-wrestling seems like a pop cultural entity. In the West, at least. The other 364 days of the year it occupies this odd, stepchild-esque position in the mainstream. You can actually share your passion with non-hardcore viewers (yanno, the people you meet 99% of the time) and not get the typical "you still watch that shit?" reaction. Pro-wrestling Christmas, if you will. So it has that going for it, but, as an actual card, it tends to be flawed.
The post-Hogan @ X8 dependence on nostalgia acts and part-timers really goes ways to making the full-time roster (the ones you're generally depending on for...well, everything the rest of the year) seem like a bunch of inconsequential noddies. And again, regarding hype, it's not really the culmination of things it once was.
So, yeah, objectively you could consider it overrated, but that doesn't really account for the ineffable allure of the show of shows.

Everything's overrated to some people.
Doesn't matter what it is......new born babies? They're overrated to somebody. Cute puppies? Overrated.

I hate the fact that nowadays everything is about attaing that "WrestleMania moment". Sure Bryan got his WM moment 2 years ago but the months that preceeded that totally sucked.

Feeling mad about the hero getting screwed, then being elated when he overcame the odds and won it all.

What I meant is the CHASE sucked, booking wise. He wasn't made to be the hero. At the core of it he was made out to be a lucky motherfucker who staged a Raw fan invasion to get shot he had every right at in the first place.
