So long time listener of Law and wrestling fan for over twenty years. I recently came across something that struck me odd. I was watching the match between Flair vs Anderson at Fall Brawl 1995. At the beginning of the match I caught a sign that said Flair 3:16. If I remember right, and this is why I am asking, didn't Austin first use the whole Austin 3:16 when he won KOTR in 96? Was this something he used before? I honestly can't remember. I guess I always assumed this was a Austin creation but it seems to have been floating around maybe? For those curious you can go to 1:37:25 on the WWE network's version to get a shot of the fan holding it, good luck with that haha.

I remember seeing John 3:16 on signs at sports venues in the early 90's. And honestly it was probably even before that but I was just to young to notice. So somebody was just ahead of the game in bringing it over to wrestling.

The biblical referencing sign "John 3:16" used to appear at sporting events quite often, starting in the 80's (http://www.cracked.com/article_19529_5-sports-fans-who-ruined-sports_p2.html)...
EDIT - sorry I just finished posting and saw the above post.

Yeah John 3:16 is a very popular bible passage and even before Austin used it people were putting different names with 3:16. Austin picked 3:16 cause it is probably the most well know passage. Just a coincidence that a fan made a sign with Flair's name on it a year before.

Yes that's right. Maybe Jake was saying John 3:16 alot at that time.

Austin said he came up with that pretty much on the fly.

Everyone's right.
It probably appeared at Fall Brawl because the South is heavily religious.
John 3:16 is the most famous verse in the bible. "for God so love the world he gave us his only son."
Austin never would have used it if it wasn't for Jake Roberts being a "religious" character
