I don't think Cesaro has "no personality" to me, its a bit of the same issue most talent is having, "here's a script, memorize and say this" some can do it, but some look idiotic doing it, gone are the days of great fly by the seat of your pants promo. "Go out there and tell us why you hate this guy and wanna beat his ass" doesn't happen anymore, I use to love teh Calgary Stampede for this. Match ends, loser comes to see Gordon and cuts a promo, short and sweet "You beat me this week but I want a rematch!" stuff like that was to me gold and got my interest going for next weeks show.
It doesn't need to be complicated, just to the fact. And those require more "heart" then talent, you gotta mkae me believe you want this guy, that was fun. Owen use to cut some really simple promos in Stampede and I loved it, he carried that style over somewhat in his "I am not a nugget" promos.

Owen Hart had personality, the whole "too scripted" argument is foolish IMO, because its up to the performer to use the script to find his voice.
Act like a De Niro or Alan Arkin couldn't get a shit script like Troll 2 and couldn't make it work.

Act like a De Niro or Alan Arkin couldn't get a shit script like Troll 2 and couldn't make it work. It's been stated time and again that the talent no longer has the liberties they used to, they have to be more careful because they are a publicly traded company etc. The war is over so soldiers need to take orders and no go rogue as they could before. Also Vinnie wants things one way, he'll get it, since he's the only real deal in the business, you tow the company line or walk that line straight out of a career. So if Vinnie tells you "I want you in snake skin boots and tights" and you wore none at the time, guess what! You wear what Vinnie says, of he'll find someone who will, that's not to say they can't present ideas, and that may also be part of the problem, that some of the talent is afraid to approach Vinnie on their own. All bigger names have said he is approachable with ideas, but have them, and present them! Owen had personality, so did Lance Storm really, the gimmick wasn't great but they made them work, I think one of the biggest issues is that the "writers" have NO CLUE what wrestling is, and the older talent is no longer able to keep in touch with the new crowd, so you get a miss and a writer from Hollywood who thinks his/her shit is gold when it's really just the drizzling shits!

Promoters have always told performers what thwir gimmicks were, if a promoter told a performer "wear makeup and act gay" they did it.
If Bill Watts told his boys to get into fights at the local bar, they did it.
If Vince McMahon told Dusty to wear polka dots....he did it.
If Jerry Lawler told Jom Harris to act like a cannibal from Africa...he did it.
This isn't some new phenomenon, just the fact that WWE is shunning the archaic traditions of bookers and going to a team of writers doesn't mean it's anything different than what went down in the 80s, 70s, or 60s. It's just means the performers themselves are too green to take scripts and turn them into their own words.
Alex Greenfield always talks about how good Mark Henry is at doing that, but he wasn't doing that until 2006. He finally got enough experience for that lightswitch to turn on and gained confidence from it.
It bugs me on what this generations talent complain about, oh they are creatively constricted? Bullshit, the tools are gone? Bullshit. It's up to them to evolve the tools.
Can't swear? Find other ways to do it.
Can't blade? Find new ways to tell stories.
Can't do lowblows? Find something else.
Get that old shit outta here, other genres of entertainment have evolved from what they were able to do from generations ago. You won't see cartoons from today do the stuff Looney Tunes were doing.
You won't find comedians doing the same kind of jokes people were doing a generation ago.
You don't even see movies try do the same kinds of flicks they did back in the day....those reboots are still vastly different than what the old movies were.
If you think things were better in your day, you are the ones who is "out of touch"....there is no ther way I can explain that.

Cesaro's in that post-NXT phase Daniel Bryan was under -- no gimmick besides being a great wrestler. In the WWE framework of things currently, it's hard to make that work.
