I know that they've been around for a long time and the list of serious injuries is low however after seeing the 3 team Ladder match from Impact, I must admit I am starting to cringe especially when they are multi-man and there are multiple ladders in and out of the ring and after seeing Jeff Hardy's final bump at the end of the match, I am beginning to think that a serious accident and/or injury like Joey Mercury is going to happen soon. I know that they are highly trained and the spots are laid out carefully but I have this feeling that something nasty is going to happen?

I'm pretty sure at least one person gets hurt at every mitb too.
For me, it's a big dilemma. I love ladder matches and seeing guys go through crazy spots with ladders. However, it shortens careers and hurts people. In the end though, I want the ladder matches. As a viewer, I think it's worth it. It's not me getting hurt. My two cents. That is all.

I don't think Ladder Matches are worse than they were 15-20 years ago, but I just don't see the need for them anymore. There's no art involved in ladder matches. Personally, I'd throw all hardcore style matches out. Everyone's seen everything and it desensitizes audiences to the actual pain involved. At some point promoters need to draw a line between what is actually wrestling and what isn't.

They really went crazy in 2000/01 thanks to the Hardys/E&C/Dudleys. I for one love a good spotfest, but some guys definitly go way to far. If I never see another teeter/totter spot in my life (the spot that destroyed Joey Mercury's nose), I will be happy.

Me too, I also don't like it when the ladders are used as weapons i.e. sticking them in the chest, being body-slammed onto them and the spot from WM X where Shawn got on top of a ladder and just let it drop onto Razor. I'm thinking that the ladders have to be gimmicked some way but I still cringe.

It's the nature of the genre. Each new ladder match wants to draw from and exceed prior match expectations.
I can't imagine any ways to make those matches safer. They must use real metal ladders. You can't replace them because they need the supportive strength for climbing. Toppling or jumping from the top of a ladder is going to result in a higher fall.
I watch wrestling to see simulated battles between performers. I do not want to see anyone get hurt.

considering 2014 standards, Michaels letting the ladder fall onto Ramon is positively tame.
My favorite ladder match is from PWG Threemendous III. Super Smash Brothers vs FutureShock vs Young Bucks. Just an insane spot fest. Great stuff. But they had to be hurting for many days afterwards.

Ladder matches aren't injuring as many people as they were in the late 1990s/early 2000s, by the fact that there's less of them in quantity and also spots are careful chosen. Your statement about "feeling that something nasty is going to happen" is what they are hoping to achieve from you as a viewer.

Jericho got an anal probe in a ladder match, think the worse has already happened. The expectations of fans has gotten to the point where stuntastic spectacles like ladder matches seem passe and pretty much scoff at any ladder matched booked with performers they think won't take some spectacular bump that would in all likelyhood shed a year or two off their career. The overabundance of the gimmick match itself makes professional wrestling careers shorter than they've ever been.
Hate to say it, but the Dudleys, Hardys and Edge and Christian really set the bar too high and ruined an entire generation of so-called professional wrestlers who think giant bumps means workrate.

One way to make Ladder Matches safer is to eliminate the Tower Of Doom Ladders that are 20 Feet High.
