He was a showstopper because he had access to all the resources in the company and wasn't extremely injured by the time he gained that privilege.
His matches were always eye poppin and rocking even fun, but looking at a total career of what, 5 matches, he's no where close to Flair or even the Brooklyn Brawler really.

I never found him credible in a match ever. Same with Vince and Stephanie.

At first he wasn't supposed to be credible. His match at 'Mania 15 shows that. He only won because of interference. I now respect the guy because he tried to get over. He did some crazy shit. After seeing guys like David Flair and Garrett BITCHoff, I have respect for Shane

Plenty of others guys would have done the same to get over had they been allowed. They actually would have got over as well.

Yeah, you know whenever Jeff Hardy watched his matches he'd think, "Hey, they said I couldn't do that!"

He showed plenty of balls in that KOTR match with Kurt Angle.I'll give him props for that.

He put his heart and soul into the company and paid his dues so when he ran the company people would respect him for putting his body on the line in the ways he did. Sad to see that he never took the reigns of the company, but I never really expected him to.
I personally always enjoyed when Shane was on because it was always something to talk about. He wasn't Triple H where he selfishly put himself in situations to benefit himself, almost every time he put his neck out to find a way to have people gain his support, and he got mine.

Yeah, I didnt really respect him or what he was doing at the time, but years later I have major respect for him. I got to meet him at a NHRA event years ago (When the WWF was sponsoring a drag race car) and he was a really cool guy. Sucks were stuck with the Levesque clan running things, and not Shane-O.

Respected Shane O Mac big time which he would do all these insane spots that most guys wouldn't do. I remember WM 17 Shane vs Vince when Shane was about to do the Van Terminator spot on Vince using the garbage can thinking there is no way he is going to connect cause the WWE rings are bigger than the ECW rings were when RVD did those spots which I was surprised that Shane actually connected.

Not sure where I'd place him. On one hand he was an spot machine. Every match you'd tune in to see just what Shane would put himself through and that's a kind of mindset I don't feel comfortable having. It's that sort of mindset that caused people back in the late 90's to call Mankind/Taker at King of the Ring 'The greatest match of all time....' Well, no, it wasn't.
Same thing with Shane. Did he have great matches? Well, no, they were spot fests.
But he was entertaining and the level of Spot-o-rama never got to a Mankind/Taker level so I'm more comfortable with it, I guess.
Looking back I was entertained by his performances but I'd never call him a great worker.

respect then, respect now.
Obviously a spot machine, but you got to respect anyone who does some of the spots he did, whatever the reasons he did them for.

I was impressed when I watched him go into matches even though I knew was a total amateur. The man took insane bumps above and beyond the call of duty. Plus I loved how came out in his modified versions of his opponent's shirt. He wasn't a worker but he went all out in his matches. I still respect that.
